The Danish Play by Sonja Mills

After a national and international tour four years ago, Nightwood Theatre (Canada’s National Women’s Theatre since 1979) is incredibly pleased to bring Sonja Mills’ The Danish Play to Toronto for a return engagement by popular demand. Kate Hennig leads an all-star ensemble in a riveting production that sold out in four cities and received massive critical acclaim.
The Danish Play, a true story of resistance, is the swirling saga of Agnete Ottosen, Danish Poet and famed Resistance fighter. Agnete was the great aunt of Sonja Mills. Mills was inspired to write the play after reading the diaries and poems Mills’ mother inherited from her sister. Sonja spent considerable time translating the work, traveled to Denmark several times to learn more about her aunt’s life and to interview other Resistance fighters and distant relations, and toured Padborg and Ravensbruck – two of the concentration camps that Ottosen survived.
In a swirling, non-linear timeline, the story of Ottosen’s life unfolds. Horrific, impassioned, heart-wrenching but full of Nordic wit, The Danish Play brought audiences to their feet with a moving dramatic experience which offered historical insight and critical reflection on some of the most urgent issues of our time.
February 22 to March 17
