The session will start at 5:30pm when we will watch the film on the big screen in Madisons Cafe and the discussion starts at 7:30pm.

Summary

Kym Buchman (Anne Hathaway) returns from a rehab clinic for her sister’s wedding. Rachel (Rosemarie DeWitt) is marrying a musician named Sidney (Tunde Adebimpe). Kym’s return, however, casts a shadow over the joy of the weekend. Tempers flare as the Buchman family is forced to confront a tragedy long buried in its past. It is during this time of heightened emotions that each member of the family is finally able to express their feelings about one another and get it all out in the open. And while all of this is going on, Kym has to keep going to her Twelve Step Meetings, to help with her struggle against alcohol and drug addiction.

Background

Rachel Getting Married was directed by Jonathan Demme and written by first-time screenwriter Jenny Lumet. ‘I loved Jenny's flagrant disregard for the rules of formula,’ says Demme, ‘her lack of concern for making her characters likable in the conventional sense, and for what I considered to be her bold approach to truth, pain and humor.’ Concurrent with the looseness of the script, Demme took a loose approach to the filming of the movie, trying to make it look like ‘the most beautiful home movie ever made.’ In order to achieve that effect the scenes were not rehearsed beforehand and improvisation was encouraged. Having Sidney and many of his friends as musicians gives plausibility to the film’s live soundtrack. Demme also invited a number of his own friends and relatives to be among the guests at the wedding to lend an air of authenticity to his movie.
