The final in the lecture series “Facets of Mount Auburn: Celebrating 175 Years of a Boston Jewel”:

In honor of the 175th Anniversary of Mount Auburn Cemetery, the nation’s first garden cemetery, Dr. Charles Beveridge and Arleyn A. Levee will present a free landscape architecture lecture entitled, “The Cemetery and The Park: Nature, The Designed Landscape and Urban Planning” on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at 6 p.m. at the Rabb Lecture Hall, Boston Public Library.

Dr. Beveridge is an expert on Frederick Law Olmsted’s work and was the series editor of the 12-volume The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted. His career has been devoted to studying Mr. Olmsted’s philosophies and landscape architecture. Ms. Levee is a landscape historian and Olmsted scholar. She has worked with preservation groups throughout the country, particularly those involved with historic landscapes.

This lecture will examine the influence of Mount Auburn Cemetery and the contributions of the Olmsted firm to the public park movement of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The lecturers will pay particular attention to the concept of nature expressed in the landscapes, their approach to creating a therapeutic landscape experience, and their place in the city planning movement in this country.

Mount Auburn Cemetery is celebrating its 175th Anniversary with a year of lectures, musical performances, and other events at the Cemetery. This lecture is part Mount Auburn Cemetery’s seven part lecture series “Facets of Mount Auburn: Celebrating 175 Years of a Boston Jewel”, is a fitting event for Mount Auburn Cemetery, which is renowned for its magnificent and varied landscaping.
