Deacon Tom O’Connell will host a viewing of a one hour DVD on the life and ministry of Archbishop Sheen on May 8th at 7:00 pm in St. Mary Immaculate’s Cana Hall West at 15629 South Rt. 59, Plainfield.

You will learn how Travis and Betty Engstrom prayed for one hour that their stillborn son would breathe. In the 61st minute, he did. His parents prayed for the intercession of Archbishop Sheen and believe that Sheen intervention saved the life of this healthy, beautiful boy.

In May 2011, a two volume “position” paper describing why Archbishop Sheen should be considered for beatification and canonization was presented to Pope Benedict XVI. It included letters from nearly 100 Cardinals supporting the cause. It includes documents on this possible miracle.

Archbishop Sheen, a native of El Paso, Il. (near Peoria) attended St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, IL. He was ordained a priest on Sept 20, 1919 and consecrated a bishop in 1951.

His fame as a media pioneer began in 1926 on New York City radio. His “Catholic Hour” radio broadcasts (1930-1952) reached 4 million people nation-wide each Sunday afternoon. His greatest success came via his network television series “Life is Worth Living” (1952-1957). Reruns can be seen on EWTN-TV.

In 1950, he was appointed the National Director of the Propagation of Faith, a position he held until 1966. Archbishop Sheen entered eternal life in 1979.
