The Cantando Cello Ensemble from Sri Lanka - Western Music Recital. In collaboration with Time and Talents Club. The Cantando Cello Ensemble gave its debut performance in 2005. Since its inception, it has given a platform for cellists to perform both solo and ensemble repertoire, ranging from Baroque to Jazz and contemporary music. While maintaining high performance standards is a priority, Cantando is also a training ground for young cellists, and therefore, the ensemble consists of cellists of varying ages and stages of development. The group has a core of cellists, membership not being restricted to Sri Lankans. Cantando seeks not only to train cellists in the art of ensemble playing, but also to bring to Sri Lankan audiences some of the unique works written especially for cello ensemble. Over the few years, the ensemble has performed works written specifically for cello orchestra as well as arrangements and transcriptions of well-known works, such as Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Dvorak's Slavonic Dances and The Holberg Suite by Grieg. Apart from standard classical repertoire, the ensemble also performs Jazz and contemporary music and has featured music by the Beatles, Leonard Bernstein and the suite for cello and jazz trio by Claude Bolling. The programme will include works by Bach, Saint-Saens, Popper, Dvorak, Bernstein, Henry Mancini and Gade.
