Caltech Jazz Bands, directed by William Bing, will kick off their new year with Latin Jazz. This event will be held at 8:00 pm on Saturday, January 30, 2010 in Caltechs Beckman Auditorium. Featured artists include composer and arranger Paul Lopez, Latin percussionist Robertito Melendez, Mariachi Alma de Mexico, and Latin dancers Sean Nandayapa and Rita Rivera. Selections include Uno Mas, Floreando, Dazzle, Manteca and many more. Paul Lopez was born and raised in Los Angeles. He attended Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles, studied trumpet with Doc Hiner and Louis Maggio, and largely influenced by Bunny Berigan. Paul’s extensive studies include private studies in Los Angeles, Julliard in New York, and Pablo Casals Conservatory in Puerto Rico. Robertito Melendez, originally from the East Coast came to Los Angeles to pursue his career in Latin and Pop music. Influences include Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Tito Puente. Robertito has performed with Bobby Matos, Poncho Sanchez, and Tierra. Additional entertainment will include a Mariachi band, and salsa dance performances.
