Enjoy a theatrical portrayal of N. W. Hegeman, the Comptroller of Currency during Abraham Lincoln's presidency. Mr. Hegeman talks about the events surrounding the assassination of our sixteenth president. Starting with a letter written by Mr. Hegeman to Massachusetts resident Elizabeth Peabody from April 1865, local historian John Dempsey weaves a poignant account of the sorrowful events and an illuminating glimpse into the character of a great leader and an "early adaptor.”

John Dempsey is a retired principal of the Edward Devotion School in Brookline, Massachusetts. His interest in Abraham Lincoln stems from a love of history, a curiosity about how leaders lead, and a mission to keep Lincoln from receding from American memory. A 1968 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Dempsey was a public school educator for thirty-four years. He currently serves on several civic committees in Brookline, MA, where he and his wife an raised their family.
