The George Polk Awards are conferred annually to honor special achievement in journalism. They were established by Long Island University in 1949 to commemorate Polk, a CBS correspondent murdered the year before while covering the Greek civil war. The panel includes- A.C. Thompson, ProPublica, winner of the 2010 George Polk Award for Television Reporting for the Frontline documentary for revealing scandalous police behavior in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina; Dana Priest, The Washington Post, winner of the 2010 George Polk Award for National Reporting for a disturbing two-year investigation of the security apparatus spawned in the wake of 9/11; Michael Hastings, Rolling Stone, winner of the 2010 George Polk Award for Magazine Reporting for a story that prompted the dismissal of U.S. Army General Stanley as commander in Afghanistan; and moderated by John Darnton Curator, George Polk Awards.
