The Alhambra fort stands on a low hill which dominates the city of Granada in SW Spain. A small bastion in the 11th Century, it was expanded into the Alcazaba fort by Mohamed I in the early 13th Century. The Nasrid Dynasty subsequently ruled Granada from 1238 till 1492, creating a wonder of Islamic art and refinement. The Alcazaba later became a military citadel while superb palaces and gardens were built on the adjoining ridge, defended by mighty bastions and walls. The Alhambra (literally the red one) would eventually be taken by the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492. Details of this event may be subject to change.
