Stiles is the author of The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt, which won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Biography and the 2009 National Book Award for Nonfiction. It was named a New York Times Notable Book and one of the best books of the year by The New Yorker, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, San Francisco Chronicle, Kansas City Star, and the Washington Post. He is also the author of Jesse James: Last Rebel of the Civil War, which was published in 2003 to rave reviews. Salon.com called Jesse James, "Perhaps the finest book ever written about this American legend," and the New York Times said it was, "So carefully researched, persuasive, and illuminating that it is likely to reshape permanently our understanding of its subject's life and times."
