San Francisco’s legacy as a hotbed for musical innovation continues in the heart of the city’s vibrant entertainment scene with a preview of Preservation Hall West at The Chapel at 777 Valencia in the Mission District, October 4-7, 2012. The weekend features a powerhouse of musical talent from the Bay Area and beyond, including the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Elvis Costello, Buddy Miller, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Allison Moorer and many more artists to be announced.

This exciting new music venue and restaurant is located in a 1914 building that was originally built as a mortuary, and has been renovated by veteran Bay Area commercial real estate developer and restaurateur Jack Knowles. The beautiful chapel with its 40-foot high arched ceiling has been converted to a music room, while the rest of the building has been remodeled to hold a restaurant and casual grill with an outdoor dining patio. The project is a collaboration between Jack Knowles and Ben Jaffe, Creative Director for the legendary Preservation Hall in New Orleans.

“We are thrilled to be reopening this building for its new chapter in San Francisco’s evolving history,” said Knowles. “We believe the Mission is now to San Francisco what North Beach and the Haight have been to the City’s cultural history in years past, and we’re proud to be here. We want 777 Valencia to become part of the heart and soul of the Mission neighborhood, and to provide a place where musical cultures can merge, and where the incredible creative energy around us can find a home.”

“Preservation Hall West is an opportunity for us to bring the philosophy of what we do in New Orleans at Preservation Hall to the Bay Area,” said Ben Jaffe, Creative Director of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. “The connections between San Francisco and New Orleans are evident: we are two of the most unique cities in the world and we share so much in common, it felt like the next obvious evolution for Preservation Hall. This West Coast expansion is a way for us to engage a new audience that has a different connection to music and the arts and to explore other cultural music roots.”

The Chapel will be christened October 4 – 7 with an all-star line-up weekend featuring the following artists:

Thursday, October 4, 9:00pm: Preservation Hall Jazz Band with special guest Robert Earl Keen.

Friday, October 5, 9:00pm: Preservation Hall Jazz Band with special guests Steve Earle and Allison Moorer.

Saturday, October 6, 7:30 & 10:30pm: The 6th Annual Richard de Lone Special Housing Project: A Bagatelle and Jambouree featuring Elvis Costello and his band Austin de Lone, Bill Kirchen, Ruth Davis, Paul Revelli singing the songs of Robert Hunter, Charlie Rich, King Oliver and other hooligans. Other guest performers include Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale as well as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Sunday, October 7, 8:00pm: Preservation Hall Jazz Band with special guests Justin Townes Earle and Amanda Shaw and the Cute Guys.

The Chapel restaurant will initially be serving light bar fare, with a full menu starting early next year. When fully opened, the restaurant will feature a menu developed by Executive Chef Matt Colgan, who heads up the kitchens at Knowles’ highly acclaimed Oakland restaurants, À Côté and Rumbo al Sur. The cuisine will draw from A Cote’s French/Mediterranean fare, as well as from elements of New Orleans cuisine.
