For their PCMS return, the European masters offer a pleasing first half of quartets by Schubert and Britten, then join forces with the virtuosic Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin for Shostakovich’s G Minor Piano Quintet, a rich-toned, fiendishly difficult work that is widely considered to be one of the Russian composer’s finest creations.
