The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette raves that “there is no finer ensemble in the world, expressively and technically” than the Takács Quartet. Formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, the Takács is today based in Boulder as quartet in residence at the University of Colorado. Their award-winning recordings include the complete Beethoven Cycle (their 2003 recording of the Razumovsky quartets took home a Grammy) and two discs of Brahms. Their PCMS return features two Schubert quartets and the Philadelphia premiere of Daniel Kellogg’s fourth string quartet. Kellogg based this work on the slow movement theme of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet – which will also be heard on tonight’s program. Renowned pianist Jeffrey Kahane, performing Schubert’s Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960, also joins the Takács for this special opening night program.
