Taijiquan (also t’ai chi ch’uan) defies exact description. It is a martial art. It is meditation. Much like dance, it coordinates body and mind through complex movement. It is also mobility therapy, increasingly prescribed as we age. We will explore taijiquan as a type of qigong. Qigong is a set of practices yoking together one’s attention, breathing, and movement. It is yogic (“yoke” and “yoga” being cognate). Taijiquan, in all its forms, is qigong, and we will explore its movements, hoping to open the door onto some of its mysteries.
