The SYO Philharmonic is a full symphony orchestra, and the training ground for high school-aged musicians who aspire to the Sydney Youth Orchestra and beyond. As part of Riverside Theatres’ Big Notes music series on Sunday 31 August at 3.00pm, the SYO PHILHARMONIC IN CONCERT will highlight the broad range of repertoire its young players are exposed to.

Conductor Brian Buggy will direct the SYO Philharmonic in a selection of popular symphonic works in a program that will delight audiences of all ages. Following their acclaimed tour of the mid-west of NSW, the orchestra will also present the virtuosic Capriccio espagnol by Rimsky Korsakov and a fabulous performance featuring the principal clarinetist Kevin Smith playing the Artie Shaw Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra.

“The concert is certain to entertain and satisfy even the most discerning music lover,” said Brian Buggy OAM. “This outstanding 70 piece youth orchestra looks forward to your presence, your support and your enjoyment of this major concert.”

The SYO Philharmonic has around 70 members with an average age of 18. It is a full symphony orchestra that offers its players the opportunity to discover a broad range of repertoire from the classical, romantic and 20th century periods. It is the second symphony orchestra in the Sydney Youth Orchestras family, and covers advanced rehearsal and orchestral techniques as the training ground for the SYO.
Brian Buggy OAM was a Musical Director for JC Williamson, conducting many of the premiere performances of the leading musicals in Australia. He is held in high regard by the Australian musical community. One of Brian's claims to fame is that he was Hugh Lunn's bandmaster and was featured in Over The Top With Jim.
‘The SYO Philharmonic’s concert at the 2007 Mungindi Music Festival was the best performance I have ever seen by a group of people that age’’ - Don Burrows, AO MBE
