Sydney Youth Orchestra - Power + Passion October 10, 2009

The Sydney Youth Orchestra (SYO) and esteemed guest conductor, Richard Gill come together in Power + Passion to perform some of the most admired and popular works in German repertoire. Together they will perform at Riverside Theatres on Saturday 30 October at 7.30pm.

The programme will include Wagner’s Rienzi Overture, Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 and Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major with a solo performance by the Sydney Youth Orchestra Concerto competition winner, Liisa Pallandi.

Since 1973, Sydney Youth Orchestra has provided an international standard of orchestral training to thousands of young musicians aged six to twenty five years and is proud of its ongoing contribution to the vibrant cultural landscape of Sydney, particularly in its youth performing arts scene. SYO alumni have leading careers as performers, conductors and composers both in Australia and overseas including the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Richard Tognetti, Berlin Philharmonic’s Matt McDonald and music journalist Katarina Kroslakova. Recent SYO alumni employed in the Sydney Symphony include Oboist Shefali Prior, Violinist Kirsty Hilton and Bassist Ben Ward.

Conductor Richard Gill has received numerous accolades, including an Order of Australia Medal, the Bernard Heinze Award, an Honorary Doctorate from the Edith Cowan University of Western Australia, the Australian Music Centre’s award for Most Distinguished Contribution to the Presentation of Australian Composition by an individual, and the Australia Council’s prestigious Don Banks Award. He is currently the Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony’s Education Program. He has conducted for Opera Australia and OzOpera and boasts an extensive operatic repertoire.
