The SYO Philharmonic is a full symphony orchestra, and the training ground for high school-aged musicians who aspire to the Sydney Youth Orchestra and beyond. As part of Riverside Theatres’ Big Notes series, this special concert on Wednesday December 5 at 7.30pm by the SYO Philharmonic will highlight the broad range of repertoire its young players are exposed to.

Verdi’s tragic opera La forza del destino is a timeless tale of star-crossed lovers, and his overly romantic Overture alludes to the drama which lies ahead. Verdi was one of the most influential composers of Italian opera in the 19th century. Although his work was sometimes criticized as catering to the tastes of the common folk and having a tendency towards melodrama, Verdi’s masterworks dominate the standard repertoire a century and a half after their composition. La forza del destino was initially commissioned by the Imperial Theatre of Saint Petersburg for 1861 but was not performed until 1862.

Possibly Dvorák’s most famous symphony, From a New World is thoroughly modern in its use of American folk music rather than the more typical Bohemian influences seen in his earlier works. It was composed by Dvorák in 1893 during his visit to the United States.

The SYO Philharmonic has around 70 members with an average age of 18. It is a full symphony orchestra that offers its players the opportunity to discover a broad range of repertoire from the classical, romantic and 20th century periods. It is the second symphony orchestra in the Sydney Youth Orchestras family, and covers advanced rehearsal and orchestral techniques as the training ground for the SYO.
