Discovery Schubert: A musical lecture with Richard Gill
Sydney Sinfonia
Riverside Theatres
Wednesday 28 April at 7:30pm

From Sydney Symphony’s Discovery Program comes Discovery Schubert, a fascinating investigation into the way Schubert has pieced together his Unfinished Symphony together.

Artistic Advisor to the Education program, Richard Gill presents Discovery Schubert accompanied by the musical talents of Sydney Sinfonia at Riverside Theatres, Parramatta on Wednesday April 28 at 7.30pm. This special presentation is joined by mezzo-soprano Celeste Haworth, the talented young musicians of the Sydney Sinfonia and their Sydney Symphony mentors.

The musical lecture also investigates how the orchestra is used and specific features of Schubert’s style and a full performance of Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 (Unfinished) by the Sydney Sinfonia. Discussion of Phil Jameson’s Hysteria also features in the lecture followed by its premiere.

Under the skilled command of Richard Gill, the talented young Sydney Sinfonia aurally illustrate the way in which Schubert’s expansive melodies and long-range harmonies work together to create one of the most gloriously lyrical symphonic movements ever written and young Australian composer Phil Jameson introduces the human voice with his new work Hysteria. The performance not only features full performance of these works but also a number of demonstrations as Gill takes the music apart and allows the audience to discover how the music works.

Sydney Sinfonia is made up of Sydney Symphony players and talented young student performers who are ready to commence auditioning for positions in orchestras and embark upon a professional playing career. Sydney Sinfonia is a mentoring orchestra and it is with great excitement that high school student, Phil Jameson’s Hysteria is premiering. Hysteria originated as part of Sydney Symphony’s Sinfonietta National Composition Project. Similarly, Celeste Haworth is a student in the opera school at the Conservatorium of Music. Richard Gill is the Artistic Adviser to the Sydney Symphony’s Education program. The Discovery Series has been running since 2000 and each concert focuses upon a specific composer.
