Sydney Innovation Climate Challenge: Climate in Action FISH@6 May 5, 2010

Using Sustainable Design principles and Foresight frameworks, we will look at the largest looming climate challenge: the displacement of peoples, culture, communities and homes.

Akkarina Rimon whose home is Kiribati is on the forefront of Climate Change impacts. She will share her research into the Displacement of her people as water levels rise on these idyllic island atolls. Increased sea inundations, salination of water and reducing possibility has led to the beginnings of a Diaspora of immense proportions. How can culture be maintained? Can a nation be created inside another nation?

The loss of Kirabati culture is all humanity’s loss. What can be done? And can it all be prevented from happening? Can we sequester enough carbon and move to sustainable energy and lives quick enough to avoid this disaster? Can we welcome displaced peoples with our hearts and minds open?

Janine Cahill will identify some of the positive trends, incidents, organisations and people that are pointing to Hope for Sustainable Futures.

The Innovation Lab will explore possibilities in this Climate Challenge, our second Climate Challenge since our inaugural event in May 2009.
