Presentation:
You've heard a lot in the past couple of years about design and design thinking. But, what are the underlying principles of design thinking? Who do you need on your team to execute them well? And, how does all this relate to product management? In this session, we'll introduce the basic principles of design thinking, talk about whether or not "cross-functional" is enough when you are trying to engage in good design work, and connect to what you as product managers do and manage through a product development cycle.

Speaker:
Dr. Sara Beckman teaches new product development and operations management at the University of California's Haas School of Business. Since joining the Haas School faculty in 1987, she developed, institutionalized and directed the school's Management of Technology Program, initiated new courses on design, entrepreneurship in biotechnology, new product development, and work and workspace design, won four awards from MBA students for excellence in teaching and received the Berkeley campus Distinguished Teaching Award. Her research includes innovation management, the role of design in business, environmental supply management and development of operations strategy.

Dr. Beckman has also taught for Stanford University's Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, and been a visiting faculty member at MIT. Concurrent with her Haas teaching, Dr. Beckman has worked for Hewlett-Packard, most recently as Director of the Product Generation Change Management Team.

Dr. Beckman has B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management at Stanford University as well as an M.S. in Statistics from Stanford. She serves on the boards of the Building Materials Holding Corporation and the Corporate Design Foundation.
