Neuroscience has made huge strides in explaining how our brains represent the external world and our internal experiences, and how we solve exceedingly difficult tasks such as visual object and face recognition, motor coordination, and speech recognition.

From these advances has emerged the new field of brain-machine interfaces that translate inputs from neural sensors into external commands to operate devices such as prosthetic limbs.

This talk will cover recent advances in our understanding of how to interface mind and machine, including current work that may soon lead to flexible, thought-based neural interfaces for speech communication.

Bio
Brian Pasley, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist at the University of California, Berkeley. He received the B.A. degree in Neuroscience from Yale University, the M.S degree in Scientific Computing from NYU, and a Ph.D in Neuroscience from UC Berkeley. He has been the recipient of Fellowships from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD), and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany). His research has been widely featured in the popular press and has been published in major international journals, including lead author publications in Science and the open access journal PLoS Biology. His research interests include systems neuroscience (neural basis of speech
recognition) and neural engineering (neuroprosthetics).
