Speaker Bios

Jeff Clavier, Founder and Managing Partner, SoftTech VC

Based in Palo Alto, California, Jean-Francois “Jeff” Clavier is the Founder and Managing Partner of SoftTech VC, one of the most active seed stage investors in Web 2.0 startups. Since 2004, Jeff has invested in more than 70 consumer Internet companies in areas like social media, communities, search, gaming or consumer infrastructure, almost exclusively in Silicon Valley. With over 20 years of operational, entrepreneurial and venture capital experience, Jeff is able to add relevant perspective and value to his companies as they grow from inception to maturity, and hopefully, success.

In 2007, Jeff was recognized as one of the 13 “Web 2.0 King Makers” by (late) Business 2.0, and in 2008, BusinessWeek named him one of "The 25 Most Influential People on the Web". He is often noted for his investments in categories such as “passion-centric communities” or online gaming, or for having sold a number of his Web 2.0 startups to the likes of Yahoo, AOL, Intuit or more recently Twitter.
In September 2007, Jeff announced the formation of SoftTech VC II, L.P. – a $15M seed fund backed by a mix of institutional and private investors that will invest in 50 consumer Internet companies over 3 years. During its first 24 months of activity, the fund has closed 40+ investments, most of them still operating in stealth/pre-launch mode.

Prior to founding SoftTech VC, Jeff spent more than 16 years in the enterprise software world as an entrepreneur, senior executive and venture capitalist. Throughout his career, he was exposed to global markets leading development teams in Europe and on Wall Street, designing products sold internationally and investing in software infrastructure startups across the U.S. and Europe.

In 2000, Jeff became President of RVC Capital, the firm managing the Reuters Greenhouse Fund with $600M invested in 82 companies, including Yahoo!, Verisign, Phone.com and Infoseek. He joined the venture arm of Reuters from the company’s product development division, where he was leading a 250+ staff in Paris, London and New York, and was responsible for the Risk Management and Desktop products. Jeff joined Reuters through the acquisition of Effix Systems, a Paris-based startup company he helped develop in 1989 while still in school.

Vispi Daver, Partner, Sierra Ventures

Vispi Daver is a Partner at Sierra Ventures and has been at the Firm since 2004. He is responsible for software investments in the US and for driving the Firm’s cross-border investments in India. Vispi serves on the boards of Parature, Revionics, Razorsight and CarWale (India) and is a board observer at Approva, MakeMyTrip.com (India), Greenplum and Code Green Networks. Vispi also manages the Firm’s investment in Seedfund, a seed stage venture fund based in India. While at Sierra he has also served as VP of Business Development at one of the Firm’s portfolio companies, Sourcefire (NASD: FIRE).

Prior to Sierra Ventures, Vispi’s tenure includes a broad range of operational roles in the United States and India. He was in the Corporate Development group at Network Associates (McAfee, Inc.), a large-cap public company in infrastructure software, where his responsibilities covered acquisitions, divestitures and strategic investments. Prior to McAfee, Vispi ran product management for myCIO.com, a company that pioneered the delivery of desktop software online through the Internet. myCIO.com was among the first software companies to deliver product in a Software as a Services (SaaS) format.

Vispi began his career in India in the manufacturing industry. He worked in an operational capacity in both public and private companies. At Uniworth International, he was a member of senior management in the company’s apparel division. During the early part of his career in India, Vispi worked in startup companies that had diversified interests in mechanical engineering.

Vispi has an MBA with Distinction from Yale University and a BS in Combined Sciences from Santa Clara University.

Warren Packard, Managing Director, Draper Fisher Jurvetson
Warren Packard is a Managing Director at Draper Fisher Jurvetson. He currently serves on the Boards of Anagran, CastTV, EoPlex, Media Lario, Microfabrica, Primet Precision Materials, and SeaMicro. Warren also leads the firm's investments in BinOptics, CallGate, Hola!, ooma, and YeePay. Prior to joining the firm, Warren co-founded Angara Database Systems, a main memory relational database company, which was acquired by Personify. Prior to co-founding Angara, he was an Associate at Institutional Venture Partners, investing in early-stage technology companies. Before IVP, Warren was a Senior Principal Engineer in the Advanced Product Development Group at Baxter International. Warren is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford University and holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering: Smart Product Design. He received his MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar.

Tamin Pechet, CEO, Banyan Water LLC

Tamin Pechet is CEO of Banyan Water (www.banyanwater.com), an integrator of smart water management companies. He is also Chairman of Imagine H2O (www.imagineh2o.org), a global organization spurring entrepreneurship in the water industry through innovation prizes and a water business incubator. Tamin also serves on the Board of Directors of Lux Research (www.luxresearchinc.com), a leading provider of research and analytics on water and other clean technology markets. He is a frequent speaker on water business opportunities.

Previously, Tamin was a Principal at Catamount Ventures (www.catamountventures.com), a $215 million venture capital firm, where he invested in and supported the growth of portfolio companies in water, energy, and the environment. Before joining Catamount, Tamin was a principal investor at Goldman, Sachs & Co., where he co-founded and managed Goldman Sachs E&P Capital to invest in private energy companies, overseeing growth to over $200 million in capital invested. Tamin also served on the founding team of Goldman Sachs Specialty Lending Group, a $1 billion middle-market lending business. Prior to Goldman Sachs, Tamin held a business development position with Launch Media through its acquisition by Yahoo!

Tamin holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and an AB with honors from Harvard University.

Steve Bengston, Managing Director of Emerging Company Services, PricewaterhouseCoopers

Steve is Managing Director of Emerging Company Services (ECS) at PricewaterhouseCoopers. ECS acts as “mentor capitalists” for young, high potential companies and assists them with a variety of services, including, Reviewing Executive Summaries/Investor Presentations, Referrals, Raising Money, Partnerships and Finding People. ECS works closely with the leading opinion leaders/influencers in the Bay Area, including venture capitalists, attorneys, bankers and other service providers that have made Silicon Valley the leading high tech center in the world.

Before joining PwC, Steve had 20 years of experience in a variety of marketing, business development and general management roles at several high tech companies in the Bay Area. Most recently, he was Pres/CEO of ynot.com, a leading international emarketing and greeting card company. Previously, he was VP Marketing & Business Development at Worldview Systems, an Internet travel pioneer. At Worldview, Steve helped launch and market Travelocity with Sabre Interactive.

Steve has a BA in Economics and MBA from Stanford University. He works closely or sits on the Advisory Board at Churchill Club, SVASE, SDForum, Financing Partners, Life Science Angels, and the Stanford/MIT Venture Lab, has taught classes on funding/running start ups at UC Berkeley, Santa Clara Law School, Hastings Law School, and Stanford, and is active in a variety of other organizations in the Bay Area targeting entrepreneurs and investors. He is a frequent moderator/panelist at both university and industry sponsored events.
