Sustainable Healthcare with John Kitzhaber

June 6, 2007 - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Please RSVP to Lesley at [email protected] or 503.222.7788.

Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Kitzhaber has spent much of his professional career working to
address this issue. Before he was elected Governor in 1994 he served
in the Oregon Legislature where he authored and implemented the
groundbreaking Oregon Health Plan. Commitment to healthcare reform
remains a focal point of his current activities.

Governor Kitzhaber serves as President of the Estes Park Institute, a
leading educational forum for community hospitals; he is Director of
the Center for Evidence Based Policy at Oregon Health & Science
University; and he holds an endowed Chair in Health Care Policy with
The Foundation for Medical Excellence, an Oregon based public,
nonprofit educational foundation.

On January 13, 2006 Dr. Kitzhaber launched The Archimedes Movement –
committed to building a meaningful opportunity for engagement through
which the growing concern over our healthcare system can be channeled
into effective action The goal is to create not only the vision for a
more equitable and sustainable system but also the tension necessary
for its realization.

Today in Oregon over 610,000 people lack health insurance. The
inability to pay a medical bill is the second leading cause of
personal bankruptcy; the cost of healthcare poses a huge obstacle to
economic growth, reducing the capacity of firms to grow and
compromising competitiveness in the global economy.

To resolve this crisis we must move beyond simply defending programs
and antiquated structures to an examination of the outdated operating
system which shapes and constrains the way we finance and deliver
health care in America.

This is a free event.
