Sustainability is a word we hear everywhere lately, but what are the next steps we should take? How is it impacting the way we live, and how we design and plan our environment?

The Washtenaw County Department of Planning & Environment will host the second in a series of four historic preservation workshops, ³SUSTAINABILITY: DESIGNING A COMMON PLAN,² on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 7:00pm, at St. Andrew¹s Episcopal Church, located at 306 N. Division Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

The workshop includes a panel discussion and public Q&A session featuring Andrea Brown, AICP, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Planning; Kristen Schleick, AIA, AICP, President of the American Institute of Architects Huron Valley Chapter; Ilene Tyler, FAIA, FAPT President of the Association for Preservation Technology Eastern Great Lakes Chapter; and Nancy Schiffler, Vice-Chair of the Sierra Club Huron Valley Group; and Steve Stier, owner of RE:Construction, a historic preservation consulting firm and board member of the Michigan Historic Preservation Network. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Norman Tyler, AICP, Director of the Urban and Regional Planning Programs at Eastern Michigan University.

This panel discussion will explore how leading organizations in planning, historic preservation, architecture, construction trades, and conservation of the natural environment, can better collaborate and implement sustainable practices. Even the event¹s location, the historic St. Andrew¹s Episcopal Church, ties into the sustainability theme. St. Andrew¹s is a member of Partners for Sacred Places, the only national, non-sectarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to the sound stewardship and active community use of America's older religious properties. (For more information on the sustainable practices of Partners for Sacred Places, visit http://www.sacredplaces.org.)

Community members, professionals in the field, students and others are invited to attend this FREE event. It is not necessary to RSVP.

The Washtenaw County Historic Preservation Workshop Series has been made possible by a Certified Local Government grant from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office and supported by several major partners, including the Washtenaw County Historic District Commission, Michigan Historic Preservation Network, and the Ann Arbor Preservation Alliance. Special thanks also to St. Andrew¹s Episcopal Church.
