'Suspicious Truths: Politics and the Press in American History,' an exhibition organized by the New-York Historical Society and Columbia University School of Journalism, looks back to the 18th- and 19th-centuries when newspapers, once vehicles for the arguments of an educated elite, were gradually transformed into the mass circulation dailies that we know today, as capable of making news as reporting it.
