Honesty, self-reliance, and belief in God – these concepts seldom come to mind when thinking of Hollywood celebrity or describing modern entertainment culture. Yet, Sam Haskell, who moved from small town Amory, Mississippi to become Worldwide Head of Television for the William Morris Agency, managed to become one of Hollywood’s most revered leaders by unashamedly relying on his mother’s teachings. In his new publication, Promises I Made My Mother, Haskell recounts how he kept his pledge to his mother to live a decent life – even in the shark-infested waters of Hollywood – by refusing to become the cliché of an amoral agent. Achieving success through self-respect and friendship and his insistence on living his version of the Golden Rule, his story is an example to mothers (and fathers) everywhere of instilling in their sons the lasting values they need to become good men and devoted fathers.
