Criterion Pictures presents SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS, opening July 16, 2010 at Landmark’s Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles, for a one-week engagement.

“For wherever the sun rises and sets, in the city's turmoil or under the open sky on the farm, life is much the same; sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet.” The first American film from F.W. MURNAU (Nosferatu, The Last Laugh, Tabu) is a hauntingly beautiful romantic drama that still packs an emotional wallop after more than eighty years. While on vacation, an attractive woman from the city (Margaret Livingston) stays in a small farming community, where she dazzles a young married farmer (George O’Brien). The wicked temptress suggests that the man’s deceptively dowdy-looking wife (Janet Gaynor) might “accidentally” drown. Can he, will he go through with it? The man unexpectedly gets a kaleidoscopic taste of what the actual city is like, but the dramatic climax comes in a fearsome storm and its aftermath. Academy Award Winner for Best Actress (Gaynor), Best Cinematography and Best Picture (Unique and Artistic Production). This new 35mm print of the restoration done by 20th Century Fox, the Academy Film Archive and the British Film Institute (BFI) features the original Movietone soundtrack. (USA, 1927)

“The recent restoration of Sunrise undertaken by 20th Century Fox, the Academy Film Archive and the British Film Institute (BFI) was unique for a number of reasons, not least of which was the ethic that shaped the work from start to finish. Throughout the project, which included the first-ever restoration of the film's Movietone soundtrack, all three parties were determined to treat the 1927 film as the slightly flawed gem that it is. As BFI technical director Joao Oliveria puts it, "Sunrise is like an elegant old lady who should show her age but still retain her dignity." - from 2003 American Cinematographer.
