The Humanities Division of Richland College opens the Spring 2009 semester with a solo sculpture exhibition by Dallas artist Sunny Sliger entitled “New Sculpture.”

The show, which will be on display through Feb. 27 in the Brazos Gallery, features a selection of large-scale wall reliefs in fabric by the artist.

Ms. Sliger studied at SMU, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001. The Richland showing is her second solo exhibition, following a solo project room show, “Geomorph” at Central Trak in 2008. Her work has appeared in numerous group shows, including “Alchemy and Change” (2008) at the University of Texas at Dallas, “On Paper” (2007) at Eastfield College’s Gallery 219, and “5×7″ (2006, 2007) at Arthouse in Austin and Dunn and Brown Contemporary in Dallas. Ms. Sliger is a resident artist at the Shamrock Hotel in Dallas, alongside Lily Hanson, Peter Ligon and Kirsten Macy.

Ms. Sliger says the materials in her art are are old clothes and miscellaneous fabrics mostly collected from friends and family.

“They tend to be messily strewn about and are exposed to the floor so they pick up all the spills, foot tracks and daily wear,” she says. “These pieces hold the residue of used things or things well worn. My work looks like how your grandmother’s purse might smell.”
