Pride in SELF | Pride in COMMUNITY | Pride in CULTURE
PRIDE IN YOUR TRIBE

Australias largest Indigenous Youth, Music and Cultural festival StylinUP is back for 2008.

Inala community elders established StylinUP 8 years ago as a local initiative designed to instil their youth with Pride in Self, Pride in Community, Pride in Culture, it worked. The event has now not only become a nationally applauded festival, but is recognised Australia wide as a significant contemporary Indigenous creative development program. The stats speak for themselves: hailing from Inala, Brisbane, regional Qld and indeed from all across the country: StylinUP 2007 drew 18,000 attendees last year.

The core ingredient of StylinUP is of course the music. StylinUP boasts a proud history of combining Australias finest Indigenous Hip Hop and R&B artists alongside internationally-recognised headliners a host of local and national emerging acts. The StylinUP Emerging Artist line up provides artists from Inala, Queensland and Australia at large, with support to express themselves and raise their profile on a national level. Emerging Artists perform alongside the nationally-established and internationally-recognised musicians in a program designed to nurture the next generation of Indigenous talent. One of this years headlining acts Impossible Odds are a perfect example. Performing as emerging artists last year, Impossible Odds went on to win the 2007 Speak, Indigenous Hip Hop Competition category of the John Butler Seed Award. They return to the line up this year as a headline act, keen to use their success to inspire upcoming artists.

The other core ingredient of StylinUP is the workshops which run in the months leading up to the high profile public event and are aimed at inspiring and engaging indigenous youth. 2007 saw 1500 young people from Brisbanes South West corridor and a further 300 from regional communities directly involved in workshop programs. With topics ranging from contemporary music and dance, creative design and sports through to traditional, the 2008 Workshop program has already commenced in local schools, as well as openly accessible community venues (more information below).

Music

Headliners: Archie Roach, Ill Semantics, Brothablack, Diafrix, Zennith, Impossible Odds, Indigenous Intrudaz, Xy, Prestige Dance Crew, Coalition Crew, Trick Nasty Crew, DJCXL, and Affiliate Squad.

Emerging Artists: an integral part of StylinUP is to profile and expose the cream of Queenslands emerging artists. Hand picked, this years nine emerging artists are:

Renowned Indigenous comedian Sean Choolburra will MC the day.

Workshops

As mentioned, a major component of StylinUP is the extensive workshop program that runs for four months leading up to the festival. Workshops are currently taking place in the South West Brisbane corridor, and throughout key regional Queensland Indigenous communities.

Music and Dance: varying workshops in music creation, beat production, lyric writing, streetfunk, breakdance and performance technique are currently taking place across venues in Inala, Carole Park and Acacia Ridge.
Laydeez Biz: A program of arts, cultural and skills development workshops, specifically for young women. These workshops create a safe environment for young women to explore and express, develop identities and community solutions through culturally appropriate arts and cultural forms.
Little Laydeez: Specifically targeted at young Indigenous girls aged 4 11 and their families who live in and around the Inala region, this program looks at combining traditional and contemporary cultural expression to re-engage young girls with their culture.
Traditional Dance: Workshops for young children years 1 7 in traditional dance, food and cultural practices.

Sport, Dance and Community Events

A myriad of cultural and community events will take place at the festival, offering a mix of performances and activities that showcase the talent of the local community. Activities include Contemporary and Traditional Dance, Dance Competitions, Food and Drink Stalls, Arts and Craft Stalls, Free Rides, and an all day 3x3 Basketball competition.
