With the invention of the friction match in the 1830s, laborious processes of producing fire were eliminated. Early matches saved time, but they were extremely unstable and often spontaneously ignited at inopportune times. A small tightly sealed container, called a matchsafe, reduced friction and enabled matches to be safely transported in a pocket without fear of fire. Although initially utilitarian, matchsafes quickly became fashionable accoutrements and an art form. This exhibition showcases a variety of matchsafes, including some designed by Tiffany's, Cartier, and Gorham.
