The Seattle Chapter of the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI) is pleased to welcome presenter Yasir Fattah, Senior Director with Thomson Reuters, who has over eight years experience with stock surveillance and analysis. Yasir will cover all aspects of Stock Surveillance: What it is, how it’s done and how to use it.

The focus and attention on day to day market dynamics has surged over the past year, amid a contracting economy, global economic slowdown, and unprecedented turbulence and uncertainty driven by the global credit crisis that has changed the face of Wall Street. Understanding what is going on and why and who is driving the activity in your stock is paramount. Relying on 13-F filing ownership information, which is 45-days-old and only available four times a year, may not be sufficient.

Additionally, turbulent market conditions provide a prime opportunity for activist investors to take control of targeted companies. Through derivative trading, these activists can go undetected until they have taken a significant position. Timely trading and ownership information may be more critical than ever before. No wonder companies are turning to the powerful features of a stock surveillance program to find out what is really going on with their stock and how to act upon it.

IROs can know which institutions and specifically which analysts or portfolio managers own their shares, who is currently buying and selling and why. They can also discover what is driving the trading of their stocks – Is it a certain institution? Is it a new buyer? Is it short selling? Is it fast money? Or is it an overall sector rotation? With a stock surveillance program, IROs can also measure the success of their management meetings and analyst conferences both quantitatively and qualitatively and sharpen their targeting efforts.
