Yet, anything new seems fraught with risk - we will show you how to manage/reduce the risk while reaping the benefits of these initiatives. In this program you will gain essential insights on: 1) overcoming the real and perceived information, regulatory, technical, and economic challenges associated with eco-industrial parks and eco-business zones and 2) practically and efficiently implementing these economic development strategies to attract and retain investment, jobs and clean tech companies to new and existing employment lands in your region.

Hands-on Project Learning:

Prior to the first session, the instructor will query participants for real life projects they would like to work on throughout the course. During the first session, the participants will select 2-4 of these projects to develop during the program. Each participant will be able to choose the project he/she wishes to follow. These projects will provide a real world problem for participants to solve, and will facilitate peer-to-peer learning throughout the course. At least one project will be related to a new eco-industrial park / employment lands and one will be related to the creation of an eco-business zone within an existing industrial park / employment land area.

Who Should Attend:

This course will be valuable to:

- municipal staff (economic development, planning, engineering, parks and recreation, transportation, energy and water management, sustainability)

- municipal politicians

- utility companies

- developers

- business organizations/associations

- citizen groups

· Identify and argue the economic, social and environmental business case for eco-industrial parks and eco-business zones.

· Describe the elements of an eco-industrial park (EIP) project, from ‘raw’ land to site planning, infrastructure design, marketing and more.

· Describe the steps to transform your existing employment lands into an eco-business zone (EBZ) from visioning, characterization of employment lands, opportunities assessment, prioritization and planning to eco-business zone strategy development.

· Analyze the challenges for an EIP and EBZ and develop successful strategies for overcoming them.

· Gain advice on your EIP/EBZ project and compare and contrast its features with EIP & EBZ projects in other jurisdictions.

· Identify “best practices” for EIPs & EBZs.

· Identify champions and supporters of EIPs & EBZs in your region and the province.

· Develop a network of resources for successful implementation.
