STEPHEN HINSHAW discusses THE MARK OF SHAME: Stigma of Mental Illness and an Agenda for Change. Although more and more people suffering from mental disorders are “coming out of the closet”, society as a whole has a negative perception of mental illness. The stigma that comes from the embarrassment and lack of understanding from others can cause a person with a mental disorder to avoid seeking treatment for years, even decades. In THE MARK OF SHAME, UC Berkeley professor and psychology department chairman Steve Hinshaw examines why a society as modern and secular as ours continues to discriminate against the mentally ill and what can be done about it. Hinshaw addresses the psychological, social, historical, and evolutionary roots of the stigma of mental illness, and provides practical strategies for overcoming the problem, including enlightened social policies and legislation, family education, and responsive treatment. 7:00 PM at Cody’s Fourth Street, Berkeley
