Stella Kon drew upon memories of her Peranakan childhood to write Emily of Emerald Hill. She grew up at Oberon, the family house on Emerald Hill, which was presided over by her grandmother Polly Tan. She became the model for Emily Gan, the strong and sensitive matriarch in the play.

Many elements of this enormously popular play are intrinsically tied to local identity. Kon will share insights about the creation of her play, including family events and literary inspirations. This intimate session will be in conversation with Alan Chong, director of the Asian Civilisations Museum.

About Stella Kon
Stella Kon, award-winning playwright, novelist, short story writer, and poet, is best known for her play Emily of Emerald Hill. Her literary works revolve around themes that are distinctly Singaporean – national awareness, moral values, cultural and social heritage, and personal integrity.

This event is free and organised in conjunction with the special exhibition, Emily of Emerald Hill: Singaporean Identity on Stage.
