Stanley Park: A Stroll into 20 Million Years of Geological History March 29, 2008

Join David Cook and Nature Vancouver members for a walk along the recently opened Stanley Park seawall to view the rocks that make up the hill and peninsula of Stanley Park. We will walk into 20 million years of geological history when sand, silt and peat were laid down by rivers flowing off ancient coastal mountains during and after the time of the dinosaurs. The hill of Stanley Park owes its existence to resistant volcanic rocks injected into the consolidated sediments near Prospect Point. In recent times the hill was topped by a thin veneer of glacial gravels and sands. Freshly exposed cliff faces cleaned off as part of the Stanley Park Restoration Plan will allow a clearer view of the geology than was possible before the December 2006 storms.
