What does it mean to divide the world between East and West? When did this habit begin, and why has it been so persuasive? What does this way of looking at the world entail? Has the East or the West ever existed, and does it still?

Li Tiangang is the first Johannean Visiting Scholar to reside at St. John's College. A professor in the Religion Department of Fudan University in Shanghai, Professor Li writes on the history of Sino-Western contact, the Jesuits in China, as well as the modern history of Shanghai. He is also a noted public intellectual who regularly comments on current affairs in China. Tim Brook is the Principal of St. John's College, a historian of China, and a long-time friend.
