How would you like to take part in the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer research? On behalf of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant is hosting an event on March 14, 2009 that could save a child’s life.

What began as a challenge among friends has grown into the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Because these youngsters typically undergo treatment that causes their hair to fall out, volunteers are recruited to shave their heads in public as a bold act of solidarity. These volunteers receive pledges of financial support from their friends and family. In turn, their generous donations help fund life-saving childhood cancer research.

Since its inception in 2000, St. Baldrick’s has raised more than $50 million for the cause! Worldwide, 160,000 kids are diagnosed with cancer each year and despite tremendous progress, cancer remains the #1 disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

St. Baldrick’s research grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions where children are treated for cancer, ensuring the finest care for every child. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation has funded 25 research fellows, launching brilliant new careers in childhood cancer research. And grant funds have been distributed to over 230 institutions for laboratory research and to help make clinical trials available to more children than ever, giving those children treatment that offers the best chance for a cure.

Every year, thousands of brave men, women, and children give up their locks to raise money for childhood cancer research. We hope that you can join us as a shavee at Mickey Byrne’s on Saturday, March 14th. Each shavee collects donations from their friends and family to support the cause. Believe it or not, people will give generously to see you sacrifice your lovely locks.

While battling cancer, children lose not only their hair but years of their childhood, and sometimes their lives. In comparison to their struggle, shaving your head is a small sacrifice, and the funds raised will make a difference for children with cancer now and in the future.
