Sports For the Masses
Introducing works by: Marta Solomianko

One night only exhibition, Saturday, September 24, 2011, 7-11PM

Artist in Residence, Marta Solomianko will show work from her 4 month residency in an exhibition titled, Sports For the Masses, which opens for a one night installation at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 24, in CELLspace gallery, 2050 Bryant St. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Since its dedication, in 1996, CELLspace, located in San Francisco’s vibrant Mission District, has offered a flexible environment for artists to experiment and thrive in. Its space serves many groups, organizations, and styles ranging from Monday night Aztec dancing, to Wednesday night Tango, to a live/work international artist residency program called Project 2048. Residents of the Project 2048 program contribute to an already multi-ethnic, multi-discipline, intergenerational artistic community at CELLspace and are encouraged to present their work publicly at the end of their 3-4 month residency.

Since moving to San Francisco, California and living at CELLspace, Solomianko says her work has changed; “I began to think outside of the canvas”. Her work addresses suburban development, the American dream, and women’s roles in mass culture. Solomianko’s use of obsessive repetition serves to increase and exaggerate the absurdity she sees in life. Her first solo exhibition, Sports For the Masses, will feature works on paper and canvas as well as a site-specific installation.

Marta Solomianko was born in 1989 in Warsaw, Poland and grew up on Long Island. She received her BA in Studio Art from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine this past May 2011. She now lives and works in California.

Please join us for a one night only opening reception.
