Sports Basement Helping Local Food Bank to Reach Holiday Donation Goals December 22, 2007

Sports Basement is encouraging the local community to give back this holiday season. In an effort to lead the way, the Sunnyvale location of the Bay Area chain is hosting a food drive in conjunction with the Second Harvest Food Bank as well as a coat drive with One Warm Coat.

Donations are being accepted in the store at 1177 Kern Avenue in Sunnyvale now through the end of the month However, on Saturday, December 22nd shoppers who bring in items to donate to either cause will be given 15% off on all of their purchases that day at Sports Basement. In addition to the discount, an additional 5% of sales generated by the drives on the 22nd will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties holds the largest food drive in the nation. This year, however, the organization has had some challenges in meeting its needs. The agency hopes to raise $5 million and collect 1.9 million pounds of food in its holiday drive this year. As of last reports, Second Harvest was behind the necessary pace to meet their goal.

The Second Harvest Food Bank serves approximately 163,000 people each week - year round. By participating in the food and fund drive you can make an immediate difference in the life of a family. In addition to food items, monetary donations are also happily accepted. According to the agency, 96 cents of every dollar goes directly to food purchases for needy families. In addition to the food drive, Sports Basement is collecting gently used jackets for the One Warm Coat drive. Coat donations will also qualify shoppers for the 15% discount on December 22nd.
