3100 S Ocean Blvd
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 29577

Opening reception: Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 5:30-7:30pm. The South Carolina State Museum is a repository of the state’s rich cultural heritage and as such has purposefully collected a wide array of folk art indigenous to South Carolina. Folk art is sometimes described as traditional craft, for the works were created primarily for a utilitarian need. Always produced by hand, the creator artist used traditional materials and processes. Objects from the state collection are rarely seen except in the galleries in Columbia. In a collaborative effort with our state’s official museum, the Myrtle Beach Art Museum will feature sweetgrass baskets, Edgefield pottery, quilts and other notable art and objects that are unique to South Carolina’s folk art history.
