San Francisco is justifiably celebrated as the nation’s solo performance capital. A steady stream (or more recently, a swelling river) of audacious, dedicated writer/performers, highly-skilled teachers, award-winning directors, and adventurous producers have emerged, and are shaping provocative, passionate shows for a willing audience eager to be challenged and like to laugh. It’s important that they like to laugh. These are traditionally some of the funniest shows in the Bay Area. StageWerx and Solo Performance Workshop have joined together to present the very best of these solo performers in a new monthly series called Solo Sundays. The series occurs on the final Sunday of each month (usually) and offers theater-goers the opportunity to enjoy anywhere from two to four of the finest writer/performers around. One more thing. The tickets are only $10 each. Join us.

W. Kamau Bell is the co-founder and director of the Solo Performance Workshop. You may be familiar with his name. His solo show, “The W. Kamau Bell Curve” was a critical and popular success this past year in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and most recently at the Comedy Central Stage in LA. Not only was he honored by the SF Weekly as the Bay Area’s Comedian of the Year in 2008 but this past May he was the focus of a cover story. Solo Sundays is being programmed by Bruce Pachtman, the co-founder of the Solo Performance Workshop as well as the man who wrote and performed the solo show “don’t make me look too psychotic”, which ran for a total of 100 weeks in San Francisco, Philadelphia and LA. It's being produced at StageWerx Theatre, an intimate, subterranean 50 seat space near Union Square that is perfectly proportioned for solo performance. The theater is directed by Ty and Cory McKenzie, theater iconoclasts with a history of presenting everything from rock operas to scary movies to improv comedy to staged readings to circus acts.
