Soft Power, Global Cool
Wed., May 9, 6:30 p.m.
Japan is one of the most influential of the world’s soft powers. With the spread of goods and images Japan has a new international face - the “king of cool” - and is finding a new place in the world with the world’s obsession with Japan’s pop culture. Dr. Christine Yano of the Department of Anthropology of Hawaii, brings us closer to understanding Japan’s newfound “cool.” Hello Kitty, anime, video games and music line the shelves of stores around the world having a far reaching impact and huge political potential. Through lecture and visual examples, Yano expands on the idea of pink globalization and the power Japan has through a global consumer culture.
