A tuneful threesome on the outside, Slowpoke quickly reveals a melting pot of styles, strings and soul-searching on the inside. This alt-folk group combines sweet harmonies, story-telling, and lonesome fiddling with a moving acoustic guitar / electric bass foundation. If the devil went down to Georgia, he foolishly left Alice McGary in Iowa. This brassy Chicagoan fiddler with too much to say and too little time is the linchpin of Slowpoke. They take the songs of McGary and Australian guitarist and vocalist Denis Reich and weave them into a potent blend of old time story-telling and loosely approximated folk pop that speaks to the audience with refreshing zeal. Wry New Yorker Greg Bruna on bass guitar is like the Noah of the band herding this unlikely lyrical pair out of the rain of their various heart-breaks into the warm company of harmony and healing.

Slowpoke, featuring guest Pete Moore on cello and banjo, will be at the Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames on September 8 at 7:30 pm, playing a mixture of original and traditional music. Their infectious stage presence and melodies will undo the most thick-skinned listener as it is clear they only long to share the magic with you too. Listen and enjoy as Slowpoke pulls and stretches you from the past to the present and everything in between. What they leave you with is something that is unexpectedly relevant and moving. Tickets are available at the door for $5.
