Since the original theatrical release of the films, director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy has become something of holiday staples. Perhaps it's the fantasy escapism offered by the vividly realized Middle-Earth. Perhaps it's the enduringly heroic theme of purity of heart overcoming the wanton greed for power. Or perhaps it's just the vicarious thrill of watching armies of monstrous orcs engaged in gore-drenched battle against a bickering coalition of humans, elves, and one pissed-off dwarf. Whatever the reason for its seasonal popularity, Jackson's fantasy trilogy has amassed an audience enthusiastic enough to sustain Riverview Theater's daylong Lord of the Rings marathon for the sixth year running. That's 11 and a half hours of swordplay, sorcery, and Sauron. Furthering the Middle-Earth immersion, viewers are encouraged to dress as their choice of hobbit, wizard, or any other figure from the Tolkien universe. Costumed audience members will be rewarded with $2 off an expanded concession stand, a savings which will surely help provide sustenance for the cinematic odyssey.
