This week enjoy dinner at Union:

"Young chef-owner Ethan Stowell’s “spirited” seasonal New American cuisine is “beautifully prepared, presented and served” with “a wine list to match” at this “pricey” Downtown “favorite” where the menu changes daily, so if you see something you like, “order it, because it won’t be around for long”; an “attractive crowd” keeps the “elegant” “modernist room” full (and often “noisy”); P.S. the “bar menu is a killer deal.”" - Zagat.com

"Union brings together a memorable dining room and a prime location. In the modern-yet-warm multi-level space, beneath a soaring ceiling, suit-and-tie-clad septuagenarians rub elbows with alternative twenty-somethings wearing vintage bowling shirts and cats-eye specs. Dishes vary---daily, depending upon what's fresh and available---but we're convinced it's hard to go wrong with the tasting menu, eight smallish courses. Start with the amuse-bouche, a few tiny, ambrosial spoonfuls of the kitchen's twist on vichyssoise. Nestled on a bed of crushed ice, a pas de deux of Canadian oysters may follow, chased by a complex, smooth cold beet soup. Ahi is properly seared, and the roast duck, fat layer crisped, is quite satisfying. The cheese course is enhanced by a glass of Dow's Vintage 1985 port. Finish with pineapple-banana sorbet and a chocolate-filled profiterole. The wine list has breadth, and numerous by-the-glass choices. Service is some of the best in town: unstuffy, warm and knowledgeable." - Gayot.com
