"“If your date’s not impressed, it’s you, not the place” say romantics entranced by this Gold Coaster that evokes a “sexy” “movie set” of “old Saigon” and serves “bright, modern” French-influenced Vietnamese; a cadre of critics calls the fare “inconsistent” and “overpriced” and the service “spotty”, but most laud the bi-level “escape” – there’s “exotic sophistication downstairs”, with “white tablecloths”, “palm trees and overhead fans”, and a “laid-back lounge upstairs.”" - Zagat.com
"Step inside this Chicago outpost of the New York restaurant and you're transported to Saigon in the 1920s (well, almost). Sepia-toned photos, louvered shutters, potted palms and lazily rotating ceiling fans set the stage for exotic meals. Despite somewhat tightly packed, white-clothed tables, there’s something downright romantic at play. It’s important to note that dishes are puny and pricey compared to those at the more authentic spots on Argyle Street, however. Still, the food tastes especially good in this evocative setting. Fresh rice-paper salad rolls and grilled shrimp wrapped around sugar cane are among the openers. The lovely selection of salads includes bracing, spicy beef salad redolent of lemon grass, basil and chili. Typical entrées include crisp, whole red snapper in spicy sweet-tart sauce, ginger-marinated roast duck and a complex coconut-milk chicken curry. Be sure to check out the upstairs lounge with its oriental carpets, overstuffed sofas and tiny balcony: it, too, is built for romance." - Gayot.com
