"We’ve always been mad about Mona’s, which started as a funky little neighborhood dining room then expanded to encompass an intimate lounge featuring live jazz weekly. The mahogany bar is attractive, the lounge separated from the green-stippled, votive-lit dining room by plush velvet curtains. Service is friendly, generally crisp, attentive and knowledgeable, and though chefs have come and gone, the food has remained satisfying. Tapas, available in the lounge, tantalize. Mojo mussels strewn with chorizo are fragrant with orange and lime, and romesco sauce accompanies sweet, garlic-marinated grilled shrimp. Goat cheese ravioli can arrive tossed with lemon butter and served with portobellos and asparagus. The seasonal bistro menu usually includes such staples as tender, meaty leg of duck confit paired with lima beans glistening with lemon-chive oil; individual paellas filled with creamy, saffron-scented arborio rice and studded with chicken, seafood and choriza; and bacon-wrapped filet mignon.
