A “locally-grown” musical about chickens and eggs? During Easter and Passover? Your entire family won’t want to miss the world premiere of the musical Praise the Egg. The State Theatre and Singing Onstage have joined forces to bring you this original tale, from the book by Mary Gage with music by Richard Biever, both of whom live and work in State College.
Gage came to the U.S. from the hills behind Perth in Western Australia, where she kept a rooster, several laying hens and an old broody hen who hatched eggs and reared the chicks. Her chickens fascinated her so much that she wrote a novel called Praise the Egg about life through the eyes of chickens, which won the Angus & Robertson Fellowship for the best new novel of the year. Those Australian chickens have now become American as Gage has transformed her book into a musical. This funny, inspiring, touching, and of course, “environmentally friendly” musical about chickens and eggs is a perfect celebration of Easter!
