A concert of baroque music poised on the cusp of the new year, Singen! Singen! features selections from two Christmas works in German for choir and orchestra, written by Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Heinrich Schütz’s Christmas Historie was premiered in 1660, towards the end of the composer’s very full life. The work is a masterful retelling of the familiar Christmas story.
Movements four and five of J.S. Bach’s beloved Christmas Oratorio (dating from 1734-35) deal with the naming of the Christ child and the arrival of the three Wise Men. Singen! Singen! offers an informal concert of these works in the slow days between Christmas and New Years. Please join us.

About A Company of Instruments Baroque Orchestra
Since the fall of 2007 a group of friends have been meeting regularly to play baroque music. They decided to play two or three concerts a year, usually at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Granville and Laurier in Vancouver, their 'home'. At the moment the group
uses modern instruments (including a harpsichord built in 1972), and have made no plans to change that. However, they are striving to play in the baroque style.

About the vocal ensemble

The vocalists joining A Company of Instruments for Singen! Singen! are drawn from several well-known Vancouver ensembles, including musica intima, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Chor Leoni, Vancouver Bach Choir, and the choir of Christ Church Cathedral.
