Sinfonia Toronto w/ pianist Antonio Di Cristofano November 13, 2009

Sinfonia Toronto’s 2009/2010 Masterpiece Series continues November 13th at 8:00pm as an Italian virtuoso returns. This concert features the amazing pianist Antonio Di Cristofano.

Antonio Di Cristofano has performed as a soloist with many of the most important orchestras in Italy, as well as several others in Europe and the USA. His critically acclaimed debut CD of recordings of Schubert’s piano works was recently followed up with a CD of Brahms, Berg and Scriabin. “Scriabin’s hothouse exoticism and highly coloured harmony found an excellent exponent,” remarked one London reviewer after a recent performance. The Daily Advertiser of Lafayette announced, “Di Cristofano is a pianist of monumental proportion.”

This concert will also feature a piece by Toronto composer Chan Ka Nin. Twice the winner of the Juno Award for Best Classical Composition, his works have been performed by ensembles and artists such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Amici, Mirò Quartet, Purcell Quartet, Rivka Golani and Lawrence Cherney.

Sinfonia Toronto is comprised of thirteen virtuoso string players. “A world-class ensemble,” according to Germany’s Russelsheimer Echo, they perform standing, in the tradition of great chamber orchestras, under the direction of Music Director and conductor Nurhan Arman. A roster of Toronto’s finest woodwinds, brass and percussion joins the strings for select programs, drawn from the full range of chamber orchestra repertoire. The Toronto Star writes of "a remarkable range of colour," "ample eloquence" and "gripping authority," while La Scena Musicale declared: "Nurhan Arman and his orchestra literally conquered us." Their most recent CD, Flanders Fields Reflections features the 2009 Juno Award winner for Classical Composition of the Year, a Sinfonia Toronto commission composed by John Burge.

The programme for the evening consists of Chan Ka Nin’s Poetry on Ice, Mozart’s Piano Concerto K 449 and Schubert’s Death and the Maiden.
